Happy Halloween!

a spider's gotta work

Lukas had a lovely 2nd Halloween. He dressed up as a spider - maybe the Itsy Bitsy Spider, or maybe the spider from Little Miss Muffett - anyway, he was cute. I had hoped he would learn to walk before Halloween because the costume is really cuter when the kid is standing up. Oh well.

I took him out to my office, Nanna's office, Grandma & Grandpa Holt's, Daddy's work, and a couple of neighbors' houses. I had to fight off candy, explaining that there's no reason to give it to him before he can ask for it.

We came home and hid upstairs and in the back of the house all night. The trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood are usually not in costume and the same age as me carrying a garbage bag or Wal-Mart sack. I'm just not interested. Rich even put the doorbell chain up high so no one could ring it and drive me crazy. I did have some neighbors stop by with their kids that wanted to see Lukas' costume. They had to resort to opening the mail slot and calling my name to get me to come to the door.

Overall, a successful Halloween with no tears.

Weekend in Eureka Springs

Grandpa Haddock & Lukas ~ overlooking the fall colors in Eureka Springs on Saturday.

Lukas & I spent the weekend in Eureka Springs with Nanna. She was there for an Arkansas Optometric Association convention. Lukas & I were along for the ride. We left Little Rock on Friday about 5:30. BAD timing. It was 7:00pm when we arrived in Conway. After a stop at Wal-Mart and Back Yard Burgers, it was 8:30 before we got on our way. We pulled in at the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks about midnight. Lukas had slept most of the way, so he wasn't in the mood to get into bed.

Nanna had to get up early and head to the convention to man her table, but I got to lounge around watching Lukas play. The hotel room was nice and child-friendly. Not much for him to get into. We finally got dressed and went to check out the convention around 11am. Nanna got to show off her "handsome dude" to some of the people she talks to on the phone every day.

Uncle Kenny and Grandma & Grandpa Haddock drove down from Purdy, MO to eat lunch with us. Uncle Kenny didn't get to come to Lukas' birthday party because he was attending his Aunt Celia's 100th birthday party - wow! So it worked out perfectly for them to meet us for lunch. After lunch we checked out the hotel's "playground". At first it appeared to be only a swing set with 4 rocket swings (very old). Eventually we noticed the monkey bars that blended in with the chain link of the tennis court. The hotel also has miniature golf under a covered area. Lukas crawled around there and found a tunnel/tube thing with steps on one end and a slide on the other. I went through and tried to get him to follow. Grandpa had to get in with us and help him over the level changes. Later, he climbed the steps and went through the whole thing by himself, even went down the slide.

Lukas, Nanna, & I went out for dinner and then headed to the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge for a hayride and haunted "Trail of Terrors". We saw the big cats in their dark cages and then stood in line for about 2 hours for the ride. That was not exactly what I had envisioned. Lukas was such a good boy - he went back and forth between me & Nanna about a million times, but there were no tears. He wore his spider costume and was admired by all. They hayride was through the woods, and then when we came into a clearing, they turned off the tractor headlights and in the distance you could see the "Trail of Terrors". I was thinking about how I was going to have to tote my heavy kid all the way through the trail more than I was worried about it being scary. I managed to sit him on the diaper bag and that took off some of the weight. The trail was good, but not too scary. They put a lot of work into it for sure. The best part was when we walked over squishy ground, AKA a fresh grave. We think they buried a mattress in there or something. Lukas lost his hat on the trail, but it was later recovered.

That was about all the site seeing we did in Eureka. We got up and out of our room at 9am Sunday morning and headed back home.

Lukas' First Birthday Party

Well, the pictures are back, and they are so-so. I thought I had plenty of film, and I did. Only, it was 200 speed. I thought I could get away with it with a flash, but I didn't. Most of these are not great - but they're all I have! Thanks to Grandpa Ed for taking the pictures of us opening gifts.

We had games, popcorn (thanks again to Grandpa Ed), cake & ice cream, and fun! It was a nice day so we played outside. We got a new game called Cosmic Catch and it was loads of fun. It's a Nerf ball and it comes with 6 different color bands that you wear on your hand. The ball recognizes the colors and there are 4 different games you can play. One game tells you where to throw the ball and knows if you throw it to the right color. Pretty fun. Nanna made a bean bag toss game with Freddie the Frog on it - it turned out very cute.

Lukas had a great time being with friends and family. He got lots of cool stuff too. Thanks to everyone for coming!

Lukas turns 1

Lukas on his first birthday - October 24, 2006

Lukas had a lovely birthday blowout on Sunday the 22nd. There will be pictures in a few days - maybe next week. Lukas & I are going with Nanna to Eureka Springs this weekend and we probably won't be blogging. I skipped a few days of work this week to hang with Grandma & Grandpa Haddock, so I'm bogged down with work right now. And, the whole house seems to be getting a cold.

Lukas had his 1 year check-up today. He weighs 23lb 6oz and is 32 inches long. He's drinking whole milk now instead of formula and he's trying lots of new table foods. He really digs chili, stew, and pasta with marinara sauce.

Our friend Jessica has started a new online "shop" called the Vietnamese Adoption Shop. If you know anyone adopting from Vietnam, please let them know. She's making super-cute stuff that you won't find anywhere else.

I LOVE THE PUMPKIN PATCH!

That's what Lukas was thinking in this picture. Friday we went to the Hidden Valley Farm Pumpkin Patch with my friend Sarah and her 2-ish-year-old, Dylan. We had a good time taking pictures of the boys. Unfortunately it was a bright, sunny day. Doesn't really sound all that unfortunate, but it is when you're taking pictures and it makes funky shadows on faces and makes people squint. I still got some cute stuff - click here to see!

The pumpkin patch is a great deal because during the week it's free to just go look around. On the weekends it's $2 a carload. They are reasonably priced when it comes to pumpkins and gourds also. I came home with 1 very large (compared to Wal-Mart & Home Depot pumpkins) pumpkin, 5 small pumpkins (not minis), 3 large gourds (one looks like a GIANT pear), 5ish mini gourds, and 2 soft drinks all for $26. Plus they have wagons filled with hay to pull your little pumpkins or your big pumpkins, or both. Lukas enjoyed throwing the hay out of the wagon and eating the hay. They had a hayride, but we didn't go on it. We'll do that next time. I think they have more stuff going on during the weekend, we'll have to check it out.

Nanna's Birthday

Thursday was Nanna's birthday so we went out to eat in Bryant at Chun's Mongolian Grill. It's a pretty neat place. You pick out your stir-fry veggies like a salad bar, then they add chicken, steak (tasty steak - not chewy) or shrimp, you choose a sauce & spice level, and they stir fry it on a giant round hibachi-style grill. Lukas liked the noodles and fried rice.

Lukas looks all grown up in his little Levi's (that Grandma Haddock gave him) and tucked in shirt. Click here for all the pictures.

Confirmed: Disease Free

Our pals, Ken & Jess, have been confirmed disease free. What glorious news! That means they are on their way to being adoptive parents of a Vietnamese baby. They have been chronicling their journey on their own blog, bringing home be (how did Jess get that accent mark on the e?). The blog is worth your while... it includes fascinating international adoption numbers, photos of Vietnamese food, and of course, confirmation of their disease-free condition.

I'm so excited for them - I hope the process is speedy and the baby sleeps through the night.

Up Close & Personal

This weekend I took some close-ups of the babes. I took a ton of shots, but these are my favorites. That's the way it goes, you take a million shots to get one print.
